Energy, Escalation, and Revelation:
How to Write a Story that Captivates, Compels, and Inspires

April Writing Workshop with Alan Heathcock
This workshop has taken place but is still available as part of the series as a recording.

There are many different ways to objectively break down tenets of quality of writing and/or storytelling, but the most fundamental, for me, are the concepts of energy, escalation, and revelation. In this class we’ll explore how to define these terms for an individual writer and project, non-fiction, fiction, of poetry, and take on exercises to put the concepts into practice. Writers of all levels and genres are welcome.

Alan Heathcock is the author of the short story collection, VOLT (Graywolf Press), and the novel, 40 (MCD X FSG). He’s won a Whiting Award, a National Magazine Award, was a finalist for the Barnes and Noble Discover Award, has been awarded fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Bread Loaf Writers Conference and Sewanee Writers Conference, the Lannan Foundation, and the Idaho Commission for the Arts. He teaches in the MFA program at UNR-Tahoe.

Poetry of the Summer Solstice:
Word Witchery & Writing Spells

June Writing Workshop with Kate Belew
This workshop has taken place but is still available as part of the series as a recording.

Summer sits on the horizon. During this time, the days lengthen, the air warms, and the poetry of the season shares a summer secret, one of myth, folktales, and the wild earth. During summer, we can tap into language and symbols of abundance, growth, and sacred fires.

This writing workshop will explore seasonal inspiration related to the summer solstice, helping to craft and create poems that tie in with the themes and dreams of the season, magically connecting with the sun and allowing the writer to craft a writing spell using word witchery.

Kate Belew is a Brooklyn-based writer, poet, storyteller, and Witch from Michigan. She co-hosts Magick & Alchemy, a Tamed Wild podcast about mythology and witchcraft. Kate facilitates and teaches writing and witchy workshops and has an MFA in poetry from Sarah Lawrence College. Her writing can be found in a variety of publications. She is a lifelong student of Herbalism, Astrology, Healing, and Witchcraft.  Learn more about Kate's work at katebelew.com or on Instagram @k8belew.

Rethinking Long Poems & Gathering Repeated Themes

July Writing Workshop with Amara Amaryah
This workshop has taken place but is still available as part of the series as a recording.

Remembering is not a singular, linear act. Explore how to create sequence & collective poems that are thematically linked and speak to one another outside of time. This poetry workshop will show you the tools to creatively tease out subtle poetic links and confidently use the page to create questions about form and time. Leave the session with your own collection of poems that break, soothe, and then mold memories together to create new worlds to dwell in.

Amara Amaryah is an international poet and writer. Her poetry asks questions about generational traditions, blackness, spirit and wealth. As a Caribbean woman born and raised in Britain, her writings are also interested in voice - often voicelessness - and reclamations of identity through definitions of home. Amaryah's poetry has lived on the stages of Cosmopoetica (Cordoba, Spain), Birmingham's Hippodrome and has been translated and featured in various journals/anthologies. Amaryah's poems were longlisted for the Womens Poets’ Prize in 2020. The Opposite of an Exodus (Bad Betty Press, 2021) is her debut poetry pamphlet.

Words From Those Who Know…

“I can’t imagine a better way to spend a
Saturday morning.”

— Avon

“I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from an online workshop, and I just started writing some poetry. By the end I felt like I had several pieces I was proud of and ideas for more, a grasp on poetry as form that I didn’t have before, and an all around renewed creativity. It was so much more than I could have hoped for.”

— Lisa Rae

“This was my first ever workshop on writing and my first experience diving deeper into it. The prompts have been enlightening and the whole workshop was actually less confronting than I expected. I felt safe in this space and gently guided. It was perfect for a beginner and more advanced writers alike. I was able to remove blocks around writing and creativity without resistance.”

— Delphine

“Before the workshop I felt stuck, lost, confused regarding some decisions in my life. The meditation, writing tips, and journaling exercises made my heart feel light, wonderful and ready. I feel ready to write again and share my deepest truth. Thanks for an incredible insightful unique workshop full of passion, trust, wisdom and fun.”
