Travel writers have an opportunity to influence the world in positive ways.

Join us for an exploration of responsible travel writing with industry experts. We are looking beyond tourism and bucket list travel to discover new ways to connect cultures.

November 13 @ 5-7pm PST, + Nov 14, & 15 @ 2-4pm PST $199 per person

“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.”

— Henry Miller

This is the future of travel writing.

We're busting down the idea of a single editorial voice -- which has so often been defined by whiteness --
and instead we’re helping writers find their "prism" for every story they choose to tell.

Day 1 - November 13th
Finding Your Prism

In defining our own “prism” we will uncover the narratives we are meant to tell and the unique space in which we alone see the world. We will discuss how our own stories shape the stories we write.

Guest conversation: "How My Country of Birth Shapes My Storytelling" with Jade Moyano, Brazilian Travel Writer.

Day 2 - November 14th
Moral Ideologies

We will widen and deepen our prism to help us understand the strengths and constraints of our own voice. In this we learn the true value of our first-person narratives and what makes them so powerful.

Guest conversation: “How Racial Identity Shapes My Storytelling" with Zachary Johnston, Indigenous Travel Writer

Day 3- November 15th
Rhythm, Pace, & Structure

Using our prism to map an authentic travel story. The tools to get us there are just as vital, so we will dive into every aspect of writing from structuring scenes to what it takes to edit the final piece.

Guest Conversation: "How Moral Ideology Shapes My Storytelling" with Kinga Phillips, Activist/ Travel Writer

What Is Your Prism?

The idea that a single writer can capture something of a place in a weekend, or week, or even a month is absurd. But what we can do is capture the pieces that relate to our identity because we know those more thoroughly. This is where your Prism exists.

What you’ll do:

  • Learn to write about worlds that are new to you without "othering" or exploiting those worlds

  • Find your niche and unique point of view

  • Learn how to identify a good story

  • Learn how to pitch stories and build connections

  • Tap into mindfulness techniques and sensory language to improve your writing

  • Create better, more vivid narratives for your travel pieces

  • Learn how to position yourself in the writing industry and get published
