Great Beginnings: How to Create Work That Ignites the Page From The Very First Line
February Writing Workshop with Erin Granat
This workshop has taken place. You will receive access to the recording.
What could be more important than a great opening to your piece? This stands for prose, poetry, screenplays, or articles. You’ve got to hook your reader in the first few sentences. No pressure, right? In this generative writing workshop, we’ll look at the opening sentences and paragraphs from several literary genres to deconstruct what works and what doesn’t. We’ll also do our own writing, trying different approaches to beginnings — from character, dialogue, place, and sensory detail.
Erin Granat is a writer and filmmaker from rural Nevada. She is the recipient of the 2023 Bread Loaf Writers' Conference Katharine Bakeless Nason Contributor Award in Nonfiction. Her writing has also been supported by the Key West Literary Seminar and the Gorrell Award for Emerging Writers. She was a finalist for the Newfound Prose Prize and longlisted for CRAFT Literary's Creative Nonfiction Award. She has performed her writing at the Edinburgh Fringe and the Moth. Her debut feature film as co writer/director is MOON MANOR, a comedy about how to have a “good death.” The movie was bought by Showtime for streaming, and the screenplay was requested for the Academy of Motion Picture's Permanent Core Collection. She is currently writing her first book for the third time.
